Career management in sport: footballers' strategies and challenges on the road to retirement

Abstract
The aim of this research was to understand how athletes manage the process of career transition to retirement and also what challenges they perceive in this process, as well as the strategies used in this process. Using the methodology of interviews and content analysis, the study provides insights into the challenges faced by players during this phase and the strategies adopted to prepare for retirement. The main themes that emerge from this work include the need for financial planning, the search for a new identity after football and the psychological challenges associated with retirement from high-performance sport. Strategies used include immersion in education processes for new roles and various investments to meet possible financial needs at the end of their careers. Finally, the need for corporate education and continuing training for athletes in preparation for their post-career in football is emphasised.
