Resumen

Los bifofosfonatos son medicamentos usados actualmente en cualquier rango de edad, principalmente para inhibir la actividad osteoclástica y la reabsorción ósea. Muchos de los pacientes que consumen estos medicamentos acuden a consulta para tratarse ortodonticamente. El objetivo de esta revisión bibliográfica es conocer los efectos, cuidados y manejos de los pacientes que consumen bifosfonatos cuando se encuentra en tratamiento ortodóntico. Los principales efectos en relación con el tratamiento de ortodoncia son mayor duración de este, dificultad para el cierre de espacios y lograr paralelismo radicular. Por estos motivos, antes de iniciar el tratamiento es indispensable una exhaustiva historia clínica y explicar al paciente las posibles modificaciones en su tratamiento producto de la ingesta de estos medicamentos.

Abstract

Biphosphonates (BPs) are drugs to inhibit osteoclast activity and bone resorption. They can be use used in any age range. Many of these patients come to a consultation to be treated orthodontically. The objective of this literature review is to know the effects, precautions, and management of orthodontic patients in bisphosphonates treatment. The main effects in orthodontic treatment due to the use of BPs are longer duration, difficulty closing spaces and achieving root parallelism. For these reasons, a complete medical history is essential before starting treatment, also to explain to the patient the possible modifications in their treatment due to the intake of these medications.
