Abstract
Xylella fastidiosa has a wide host range, including citrus, and causes diseases that affect fruit quality. This study was carried out in 2000 at Fundecitrus Scientific Department and it aimed to evaluate the influence of Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC) in the development and germination of seeds, and also the occurrence of X. fastidiosa in tissues of fruit originated from sweet orange cultivars ‘Pêra’, ‘Valencia’, and ‘Natal’. The following parts were taken from diseased and healthy fruit: pericarp, mesocarp, endocarp, axial bundle and septa, which were analyzed by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Seeds were weighed and sowed under greenhouse conditions, by observing and collecting the percentage of germination. There are evidences that CVC damages the development of seeds, although significant statistical differences were not detected in the number of germinated seeds and in the final percentage of emergency.Concerning the fruit, X. fastidiosa was detected in most parts of the three varieties.
