Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the effect of doses of neonicotinoid insecticides, applied on citrus trunk, to control the sharpshooter Oncometopia facialis (Signoret) on young citrus trees. The experiment was carried out with young citrus trees (Citrus sinensis, variety ‘Pêra’). The insecticides were applied 4 days before planting the nursery trees on March 25, 2000. Acetamiprid SL was the insecticide with faster initial effect to control O. facialis, but with shorter residual effect. Acetamiprid (Band Aid) and imidacloprid were effective to control O. facialis and their persistence was superior to 172 days after application. Acetamiprid formulated in gel (Band Aid), which is released when moistened, was efficient to control O. facialis. Plants treated with imidacloprid showed phytotoxicity symptoms, characterized by burning of leaf margin. Citrus variegated chlorosis symptoms were not observed in plants treated with insecticides.
