Abstract
Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammation of arterial walls, arises from vascular endothelial lesions influenced by various risk factors. Carotid stenosis, a crucial cardiovascular risk marker, is particularly relevant in men over 65. Treatment and diagnostic methods for carotid disease are subjects of debate. This integrative review focuses on atherosclerotic plaque assessment via Doppler ultrasonography. A search in PubMed and SciELO yielded 69 articles, with 16 detailing this analysis. Doppler ultrasound emerged as the most utilized modality due to its non-invasiveness and ability to provide detailed information on plaque morphology and blood flow. Doppler ultrasound allows comprehensive plaque evaluation, identifying morphological features and estimating complication risk. Doppler ultrasonography is essential in carotid disease assessment, offering a non-invasive and detailed approach, aiding in early identification of high-risk patients and improving clinical outcomes.
