Este trabalho apresenta as circunstâncias do advento da enfermagem moderna no Brasil, no início do século, no Rio de Janeiro, então capital federal, sob a égide da saúde pública e da enfermagem norte-americana, no bojo da Reforma Sanitária de 1920, cujas diretrizes significam uma ruptura com a política de saúde anterior; analisa os fundamentos sobre os quais se iniciaram o ensino e a prática da enfermagem moderna em nosso país, no interior do recém-criado Departamento Nacional de Saúde Pública (DNSP), sob a influência política e ideológica norte-americana e o papel aí atribuído à enfermeira de saúde pública; discute ainda a formação e a reprodução desse novo agente em uma escola de enfermeiras.

This paper presents the circumstances of the institution of the modern nursing in Brazil, at the beginning of the century, in Rio de Janeiro, at that time the federal capital, under the health public and north-american nursing aegis,in the middle of the 1920's Sanitary Reform, whose directions meant a rupture to the previous health policy; analyses the fundaments on which the teaching and the practice of modern nursing in our country began, inside the newly-established National Department of Public Health , under political and ideological north-american influence, and the role assigned there to the public health nurse; also discusses the education and the propagation of this new agency in a nurse school.
