Abstract

To characterize the temporal hatching pattern and taxonomic composition of microcrustaceans from the egg bank of two Neotropical shallow lakes under different drying durations. Surface sediments were collected from two lakes (LAK1 and LAK2, Rio Grande, RS, Brazil) in March 2020 and May 2022. Samples were subjected to two drying treatments: extended (2 years, 3 months, 25 days) and short (55 days). For the hatching experiment, sediments were homogenized by lake and treatment, and five 100 g subsamples were obtained for each lake × treatment combination. Experimental units were hydrated with distilled water and kept at 24 °C under a 12 h light/12 h dark photoperiod for 46 days. Hatching events were monitored every two days, and organisms identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Twenty-six taxa from nine families were identified, only three occurred in all treatments, while others were lake- or treatment-specific. Cladocera dominated the early and intermediate weeks, whereas Ostracoda predominated in the final weeks. Cumulative richness rose throughout the experiment in all treatments. The taxonomic composition and hatching dynamics of microcrustaceans differed among lakes, whereas desiccation time and its interaction with lake had no significant effect. Desiccation effects on the egg bank differed between lakes, indicating local environmental influence. Including prolonged drying intervals may improve understanding of hatching dynamics in Neotropical lakes, particularly considering the increasing frequency of extreme droughts under global climate change.

Caracterizar o padrão temporal de eclosão e a composição taxonômica de microcrustáceos do banco de ovos de dois lagos rasos neotropicais submetidos a diferentes durações de dessecação. Sedimentos superficiais foram coletados em dois lagos (LAK1 e LAK2, Rio Grande, RS, Brasil) em março de 2020 e maio de 2022. As amostras foram submetidas a dois tratamentos de dessecação: longa (2 anos, 3 meses e 25 dias) e curta (55 dias). Para o experimento de eclosão, os sedimentos foram homogeneizados por lago e tratamento, e cinco subamostras de 100 g foram obtidas para cada combinação lago × tratamento. As unidades experimentais foram hidratadas com água destilada e mantidas a 24 °C sob fotoperíodo de 12 h claro/12 h escuro por 46 dias. Os eventos de eclosão foram monitorados a cada dois dias, e os organismos identificados ao menor nível taxonômico possível. Foram identificados 26 táxons distribuídos em nove famílias, apenas três ocorreram em todos os tratamentos, enquanto outros foram exclusivos de determinados lagos ou tratamentos. Cladocera predominou nas semanas iniciais e intermediárias, enquanto Ostracoda predominou nas semanas finais. A riqueza cumulativa cresceu ao longo do experimento em todos os tratamentos. A composição taxonômica e a dinâmica de eclosão dos microcrustáceos diferiram entre os lagos, enquanto o tempo de dessecação e sua interação com o lago não apresentaram efeito significativo. Os efeitos da dessecação sobre o banco de ovos diferiram entre os lagos, indicando influência do contexto ambiental local. A inclusão de intervalos prolongados de dessecação pode melhorar a compreensão da dinâmica de eclosão em lagos neotropicais, especialmente considerando a maior frequência de secas extremas associadas às mudanças climáticas globais.
